Three Days in Marathon, Florida (Without Overplanning)
Home › Blog Post
A three-day trip to Marathon does not need a packed itinerary. Pick one main outing each day, keep an eye on the weather, and leave yourself time to enjoy the house, the water, or a slow morning. Here are a few ideas to get you started.
Start with Sombrero Beach
On your first day, get settled and head to Sombrero Beach when you are ready for some fresh air. Bring a picnic, take a swim, or just walk along the shore. It is a turtle-nesting beach, so pay attention to posted signs and stay clear of marked nesting areas.
Keep the evening easy. Pick up dinner nearby or enjoy a meal back at your rental. You do not have to drive all over the Keys to make the first day count.
Choose a water day
If the forecast cooperates, set aside a day for the water. Book a snorkeling or fishing trip with a local operator, or keep it closer to home with a kayak or paddleboard. Sombrero Reef is one of the area’s well-known places to explore by boat. Check sea conditions and confirm trip details with the operator before you go.
Rather stay on land? The Turtle Hospital and Dolphin Research Center are both in the Marathon area. Check their websites for tour times and reservations.
Walk a stretch of the Old Seven Mile Bridge
Save time for the Old Seven Mile Bridge. The historic span is open to pedestrians and cyclists, and even a short walk gives you those wide-open water views the Keys are known for. Turn around whenever you have had enough sun. Interested in Pigeon Key? Look up current access and tour information before you make it part of the plan.
That is plenty for three days. If the weather changes, swap things around. The best part of a Marathon stay may be the hour you left open.
Before you head out
- Check the forecast before planning a boat trip.
